Salyukov named commander-in-chief of Russian Ground Forces

Russian Defense Minister Army General Sergey Shoygu appointed Lieutenant-General Oleg Salyukov, deputy chief of the General Staff and commander of the Far East Military District, the commander-in-chief of the Ground Forces on May 2, 2014, RIA Novosti reports.

Salyukov’s predecessor Vladimir Chirkin resigned after a criminal case had been initiated against him in late 2013. Chirkin was charged with receiving a bribe worth 450,000 rubles for allegedly helping a serviceman receive an apartment at the expense of the Defense Ministry.

Salyukov will be in command of the Victory Parade in Moscow.
