Putin disbands all main police directorates except one in North Caucasus

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed disbanding all 7 main directorates of the Interior Ministry, except the one in the North Caucasus, the most unsecure region of the country, RIA Novosti reports.

The police will be limited to 1.11 million officers. Andrey Pilipchuk, head of the directorate for interaction with institutions of the civil society and mass media of the Interior Ministry, said that the directorates were being disbanded to optimize the police and improve their efficiency.

District main directorates of the Interior Ministry were created after formation of federal districts in 2000. Their job was to coordinate, control and analyze the work of law enforcers in their districts and organize cooperation of police officers and plenipotentiary presidential envoys.
