Turkey plans to buy up to a hundred F-35 fighters, starting with a purchase of two in 2018, Day.az reports.
Turkey chose the F-35 fighter in 2001. It was choosing between Boeing’s X-32 and Lockheed Martin (X-35 model). The JSF program was developed to create a fighter for the Air Forces, Naval Forces and the marines to replace F-16, A-10, F/A-18, AV-8B.
The first F-35 flight was made on December 15, 2006. It has been used for training since 2012.
The jet comes in three basic versions: F-35A worth $153.1 million, F-35B worth $196.5 million and F-35C worth $199.4 million. The Turkish Defense Industry Ministry has not clarified which model it had chosen.
