The self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” co-chair of government Miroslav Rudenko has ignored Russian President Vladimir Putin’s suggestion to postpone the May 11 referendum. The “Lugansk People’s Republic” made the same decision.
Sergey Slobodchuk, director of the Slobodchuk and Partners: politics, PR, Elections Company, said that both the suggestion and the refusal to postpone the referendum were proof that “Russia was uninvolved in the events in the south-east of Ukraine today.” He thinks that the rebels were demonstrating that Putin was not their boss.
The expert noted that there was still no dialogue between the Kiev government and the rebels.
Alexey Poltorakov, a political analyst, doubts that Ukrainian acting President Alexander Turchynov’s declaration of readiness for dialogue with peaceful “federalization” activists in Ukraine would improve the situation. Poltorakov considers the anti-terrorist operation in Ukraine unsuccessful because certain political, ethnic and military factors were not taken into account.
