Russia and China sign 30-year contract

Gazprom (Russia) and CNPC (China) have signed a gas contract today worth $400 billion for 30 years. According to the document, Russia will sell gas to China using the eastern route. Gazprom head Alexey Miller has not named the price for gas. Gazprom shares increased in price by 0.9% at 1.37pm, and by 2.4% compared with their value before the news. The MCSE index of Gazprom increased by only 0.01%.

Alexey Mukhin, the director of the Center for Political Information, said that Russia had created a more balanced distribution of investment projects between the East and the West. He added that Russia could develop relations in the East with Japan and South Korea too.

Yevgeny Minchenko, the director of the International Institute for Political Expertise, said that China had great influence in Central Asia. He reminded that China had redirected the gas routes of Turkmenistan to itself. The expert predicts that China will continue gaining strength in accordance with its interest in infrastructure projects and readiness to partake in the multi-decade geopolitical game.

A memorandum of understanding for gas transportation to China using the Yakutia-Khabarovsk-Vladivostok pipeline was signed in early March 2013. The sides had not reached an agreement on gas prices until recently. Miller said that Gazprom could receive a prepayment from China for 38 billion cubic meters of gas a year, starting in 2018. The volume could increase to 60 billion cubic meters.
