The U.S. Senator of the State Virginia has thanked Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for saving Christians in the Kalamun Region and releasing Christians and worshippers of other religions from terrorists, liberating Ma’alul in April (it was under control of Al-Nusra Front), RIA Novosti reports.
The letter says that an Orthodox monastery of St. Thecla in Ma’alul was attacked by terrorists and some of its nuns were taken hostage in early 2013 and released in March.
The senator said that Al Qaeda was controlling the majority of the Syrian rebels. He added that most of the terrorists were entering Syria from Jordan and Turkey.
