Turkey to elect president for first time this summer

Turkish President Abdullah Gul said that the presidential polls of August 10 will be unique, in that the president will be elected by the population, not by the parliament, Trend reports.

A second round of voting would be organized on August 24 if none of the candidates gain 51% of the votes.

The new presidential election system was adopted by Turkey in 2007. The president will be elected for 5 instead of 7 years.
