Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will join the work of the second session of the meeting of the committee for the restoration of Lake Urmia. It will be convened within the next 10 days. The committee was established on Rouhani's orders after he named the new cabinet last summer.
Vice-president Eshag Dzhakhangiri heads the structure, which consists of several professional commissions on water resource management, geology, economics and social and environmental issues, Trend reports.
Lake Urmia covers about 6 thousand sq.km. It serves as a temporary haven for a large number of migratory birds during their migrations. Due to a long drought, the lake has been becoming shallower, with harmful affects for the flora and fauna of the region.
The lake requires 3.1 billion cubic meters of water annually.
Now each liter of water available in the lake contains 330 g of salt. Previously this indicator was about 160-170 g/l.
