Iran to protect holy Shiite sites in Iraq

The Islamic Republic will do its best to protect sacred Shiite sites in Iraq, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is quoted as saying by RIA Novosti. Rouhani also voiced his full support for the al-Maliki government in its struggle against terrorists.

The situation is Iraq became much more tense last week after militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant extremist group took control of the Northern Iraqi province of Nineveh.
