Ukrainian crisis could split Europe, German Foreign Minister says

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier fears that the crisis in Ukraine could split Europe.

“If we fail to overcome the crisis in Ukraine, 25 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, we will see a new split in Europe. We should do our best to prevent this,” he said.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier claims that the events of recent days in Ukraine and the failure of gas talks with Russia don’t make the situation simpler.

He stresses that Germany supports the Ukrainians’ efforts to choose their path independently. Steinmeier also notes that he sees no opportunity for Kiev to join NATO in the near future.
