The referendum on changes to the constitution has closed this evening in Turkey and the votes are now being counted, Trend cites Cihan.
According to Turkish President Abdullah Gul, the referendum will show how democratic the society of Turkey is. No matter what the result of the referendum everyone will respect the will of the people, he said. The amendments were initiated by the Justice and Development Party. The Peace and Democracy Party called for a boycott of the referendum.
49.45 million people were entitled to take part in the referendum.
