Experts on French ambassador's Karabakh remarks

The French Ambassador to Baku, Pascal Monnier, has recently said that a successful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is impossible unless Armenia alters its official line. According to the diplomat, so far Armenia has not proved that it's ready for a compromise.

The ambassador has also said that Russia is preparing a new plan for resolving the conflict.

According to a member of Moscow State University's Information and Analysis Centre, Yevgeny Nikolaychuk, the opinion concerning Russia's role in the process voiced by the diplomat is nothing but speculation.

"The ambassador's remarks are baseless. He has voiced his own beliefs," he said.

His position is shared by member of the Moscow State Institute of Foreign Affairs, Leonid Gusev. According to Gusev, Moscow's approach to the Karabakh conflict has not changed for years.

"Russian diplomats have always been very cautious when it came to this sensitive issue. Russia will never recognize Karabakh as an independent state," he says.
