Azerbaijan and Italy form strategic partnership

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev concluded his visit to Italy yesterday by signing a strategic partnership declaration with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. The two states signed an intergovernmental agreement on maritime transportation. The Azerbaijani Ministry for Economy and the Italian Ministry for Economic Development signed a memorandum for economic cooperation, Culture Ministries signed a memorandum of understanding, the Azerbaijani Ministry for Sports and the Sports Office of the Italian Council of Ministers signed another memorandum.

Aliyev and Renzi noted the importance of cooperation in the political, economic and other sectors, prospects for cooperation in energy. They expressed confidence in further development of cooperation in the context of collaboration with the European Union.

Italy is the main trade partner of Azerbaijan. The sides expressed confidence that Azerbaijan chairing the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and Italy chairing the European Union would work together. Renzi called Azerbaijan a guarantor of stability in the Caucasus.

Aliyev informed the Italian PM about the repercussions of Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and progress in peace talks.

Aliyev had met Italian President Giorgio Napolitano earlier.
