The Alvand destroyer and the Bushehr escort ship of the 30th Iranian Flotilla prevented 9 pirate motorboats from attacking an Iranian tanker, said Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayari, the commander of the Iranian Naval Forces, ITAR-TASS reports.Alvand had to open artillery fire to prevent pirates from attacking a tanker earlier.Sayari noted that patrols in the Gulf of Oman, Red Sea and the Bab el Mandeb Strait had greatly improved safety of ships.
