National Assembly of Armenia rejects amendment

The National Assembly of Armenia has rejected an amendment to the law "On international treaties" proposed by the faction "ARF Dashnaktsutyun" on April 7th, reports news.am.

The amendment would give the parliament authority to ratify interstate agreements with conditions. ARFD considered that these changes would have allowed the termination of international treaties in cases of procedural infractions. According to the chairman of the parliament's foreign affairs standing committee, a member of ARFD, the Armenian authorities are opposed to this amendment because of ongoing Armenian-Turkish negotiations.

"If we had proposed this amendment before the beginning of the process of resolving Armenian - Turkish relations it would undoubtedly have passed", Rustamyan said, reports RIA Novosti.

Ovik Abramyan, the speaker of parliament, earlier announced that the National Assembly will examine protocols of the Armenian-Turkish negotiations.

Parliament also examined the bill on the introduction of additions to the state budget, which provides for payment of compensation to 3700 veterans for deposits they made into Sberbank before January 10, 1993.
