Russian view on operation in Gaza

573 Palestinians and 27 Israeli soldiers have died in the Protective Edge Operation of Israel in the Gaza Strip. Veniamin Popov, the director of the MGIMO Civilization Partnership Center, an ambassador, emphasized that the operation was unjustified. He believes that the operation worsens U.S.-Israeli relations. The ambassador predicts that Arabs will outnumber Jews in the occupied territories next year.

He reminded that 2-3 missiles had hit Tel Aviv and none had made it to Jerusalem through the Iron Dome in 2012, it can no longer stand against missile attacks and should start a dialogue. The diplomat noted that a Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem should be formed.

Vladimir Yevseyev, the head of a section at the Institute of CIS Countries, said Israel was using excessive force, resulting in very many people unrelated to Hamas or any other organizations dying. He reminded that the Gaza Strip had a population of about 1.5 million. The expert reckons that a possible humanitarian catastrophe may kill thousands. He reminded that attempts by Israel to destroy Hezbollah in Lebanon were becoming a norm for Israel and will only result in more resistance. Yevseyev said that it was a sign of Israel’s weakness.

Yevgeny Satanovsky, the president of the Institute of the Middle East, called Israel’s acts unjustified and predicts that the best Israel will achieve is a temporarily weakening of Hamas.

Petr Stegny, deputy head of the Association of Russian Diplomats, an ambassador, said that the forces of Hamas and Israel were disproportional, with the latter having the Iron Dome defense system. He hailed the UNSC for the ceasefire decision that had been made especially fast. In his words, the faster balance is achieved, the better chances Russia and the U.S. have to resolve their differences over Syria and Iran.
