Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has met with a delegation led by the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Herbert Salber.
Congratulating the interlocutor on his recent appointment to the post, the president expressed confidence that it would be a good opportunity to familiarize him with the situation in the region.
Ilham Aliyev says that Azerbaijan supports a peaceful settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. But Armenia is taking an unconstructive position, ignoring international law as well as statements by the co-chairing countries.
He also notes that the internationally-recognized territories of Azerbaijan were occupied as a result of the conflict and continue to be under occupation. In Ilham Aliyev's opinion, if the Karabakh issue is not resolved fairly, under international law, the situation in the region could further worsen.
In response, Herbert Salber recalls that he has visited the region several times and is familiar with the current situation.
