Zakayev arrives in Warsaw for Chechen congress - TV

Ahmed Zakayev, who is on the international wanted list for terrorism,
is in Poland, the Polish TV channel TVN24 said, citing an unnamed
source, RIA Novosti reports.


Zakayev, 'head' of the self-proclaimed Republic of Ichkeria, had been
reported earlier to be determined to visit the Universal Chechen
Congress.


Polish police said on Wednesday that they are ready to arrest him
under an Interpol arrest warrant.


Ahmed Zakayev has been living in London since 2003. In 2001 the
Russian prosecution put him on the international wanted list on
terrorism charges.


In 2003 London provided Zakayev with a political asylum. In 2006
Russia accused Zakayev of extremism.


The Universal Chechen Congress started on September 16 in Warsaw. The
press-secretary of the congress Anna Kun told RIA Novosti that the
schedule of the forum 'Fate of Chechen people: modern reality and
prospects' will start on Thursday afternoon, the General Assembly of
the congress will start that day as well.


Ex-chairman of the Supreme Soviet of RSFSR Ruslan Hasbulatov, former
chairman of Lithuanian Supreme Soviet Vytautas Landsbergis, human
rights activist Oleg Orlov, representatives of opposition block
'Solidarity' Boris Nemtsov, Garri Kasparov, Vladimir Bukovskiy will
make speeches on Friday.


Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov said on September 15
that the congress is aimed at destabilizing the situation in the North
Caucasus. Russian Ambassador to Poland Alexander Alexeyev said that
holding such event is 'extremely dangerous.'
