Russian foreign ministry urges world to pay more attention to Middle East

The Russian Foreign Ministry has urged the international community to pay more attention and make unbiased evaluations of the situations in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon. It warned them against double standards that could strengthen terrorists and extremists, RIA Novosti reports.

Over 10 Lebanese soldiers were killed in an attack by hundreds of militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) and the An-Nusra Front near Arsal. They were trying to cross the border into Lebanon.

Yevgeny Satanovsky, the president of the Middle East Institute, told Vestnik Kavkaza that such incidents could radically aggravate the situation in the Middle East. He noted that the events in Lebanon were common in the region.

The expert reminded that Lebanon belonged to the same Mashriq as Egypt, Iraq, Syria and the Arabian Peninsula. It was Greater Syria. Levant means the Mediterranean coast. Satanovsky said that, according to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi’s maps, ISIS wanted control over territory from the Syrian border, to North Africa, Southern Europe, including Spain, and all Eastern Europe, including parts of the former Soviet Union, including Russia. The analyst believes that the region was becoming a source of terrorist threats to countries far away from it. There are Jihadi activist in Central Asia, Russia, China and Turkestan. That is why, in Satanovsky’s words, the intelligence service of Jordan cooperates so actively with Chinese counter-espionage agencies.
