Georgia protests Russian military base deals with S.Ossetia, Abkhazia

Georgia has slammed deals on the deployment of Russian military basesin South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

"Instead of fulfilling its international obligations, Russia is reinforcing its military presence in the Georgian occupied territories, and is looking for ways to legitimate the deployment of joint military bases,” a Georgian Foreign Ministry statement said.

The military bases are expected to be located in Gudauta, Abkhazia, and in South Ossetia's capital, Tskhinvali. Each base is likely to host up to 1,700 servicemen, as well as tanks, light armored vehicles, S-300 air defense systems and aircraft.

"From an international legal point of view, any agreement signed between the occupier country and self-created puppet regimes has no legal effect and is null and void," the statement went on.
