Russian general says Military Doctrine needs potential enemy

Army General Yuri Yakubov, the coordinator of the directorate of general inspectors of the Russian Defense Ministry, said that Russia should choose the U.S. or the NATO as its potential enemy. He reminded that there had been no potential enemy in the Military Doctrine since 2010, Interfax reports.

Yakubov noted that NATO bases were approaching the Russian border. In his opinion, the Doctrine should reflect the formation of the Aerospace Defense Forces, Rapid Reaction Forces, the National Center for Control of State Defense.

According to the Russian Military Doctrine adopted on February 5, 2010, nuclear weapons may be used in response to the use of weapons of mass destruction by the enemy or in high-scale aggression with use of conventional weapons against Russia.
