Some 200 U.S. soldiers to be sent to Ukraine

The U.S. will send about 200 soldiers of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team stationed in Italy to Ukraine for the Rapid Trident drills set to be held on September 13-26, said Pentagon spokesman Steve Warren.

American troops will make their first visit to Ukraine since the start of the conflict in the east of the country. Washington wants to demonstrate solidarity with Kiev, according to Warren. He characterized the manoeuvres as peacekeeping drills, the BBC reports.

Soldiers from 14 more countries will take part in the upcoming drills.
