In a press statement, Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiev says that he
didn’t make any official resignation statement, and that he will soon
appeal to the public.
“The reckless actions of the opposition leaders are leading to
unnecessary, irretrievable losses for our country: innocent people
have died, amongst them young people, including law-enforcement
workers. I am shocked by this tragedy and I wish to express my sincere
condolences to the families of the dead. Today, the world’s attention
is on the bloody events in Kyrgyzstan. It is obvious to the
international community that it was an attempt at a takeover which
took the lives of our citizens. I’m confident that people attempting
to change the power in the country should only act within legal
terrain without violating the Constitution” – said the declaration.
“As the President of the Kyrgyz Republic I lack the opportunity to
influence the situation in the country. I appeal to the internationl
community, the heads of other countries and international
organizations to highlight the critical situation in Kyrgyzstan, which
threatens to continue the chain of tragic events that began on the 6th
of March. Back then, the protesting opposition supporters carried out
an unconstitutional capture of the Talas regional administrative
building. Today Kyrgyzstan is on the brink of a humanitarian
catastrophe.
I’m ready to bear my responsibility for the tragic events, if it can
be proven by an impartial and impersonal investigation, without hiding
behind presidential immunity. Nevertheless, I believe that I was
acting in accordance with the Constitution of the Kyrgyz republic” –
Kurmanbek Bakiev stated.
The president is currently in southern Kyrgyzstan. The Zpress.kg
agency reports that it was the president’s brother, Janish Bakiev,
head of the state security service, who ordered the shooting of
people, reports Zamirbek Parmankulov, a former parliamentary deputy.
