Astrakhan to host 4th Caspian Summit

Astrakhan will host the 4th Caspian Summit to fix results of four years of work on the convention for legal status of the sea. Igor Bratchikov, Russian special presidential representative for delimitation and demarcation of borders with CIS states, an ambassador-at-large, said that governmental agreements for cooperation in using bio resources, prevention of emergency situations and hydrometeorology will be prepared for the summit.

The diplomat predicts that participants of the summit will be offered agreements to cooperate in ecology, economic projects. He expressed hope that the 18-year process of work on giving the Caspian Sea a status will be given a boost.

Iranian Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanai said that neighbours played a very important role in each other’s life. He noted that the Caspian Sea consolidated neighbours as an economic, cultural and ecological zone. The ambassador emphasized that presidents, including leaders of Iran and Russia, will have an opportunity for bilateral talks. The Astrakhan talks, in his words, will be the fourth meeting since Hassan Rouhani’s becoming the president of Iran. Rouhani’s first talks were in Bishkek, then Shanghai, then Dushanbe.

Sanai admitted that Iran was not expecting a breakthrough in Astrakhan. He pointed out resolutions for fishing and emergency situations as the most important documents for signing. He believes that the world will pay attention to the upcoming summit.
