Moscow mayor discusses cooperation with Azerbaijani president

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin arrived in Baku yesterday and discussed cooperation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. The Azerbaijani president emphasized that Moscow was a priority partner for the republic. Sobyanin noted that food imports from Azerbaijan had tripled in the past few years. He noted that the signing of a memorandum with the government of Azerbaijan will boost relations, Tvc.ru reports.

Aliyev stated that exporting new products to Moscow was important. The Moscow mayor and the Azerbaijani president discussed cooperation in agriculture, subway construction, infrastructure development, healthcare, education, culture. They signed an agreement on increasing imports from Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijani Vice Prime Minister Yagub Eyubov and Sobyanin signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation of the governments of Azerbaijan and Moscow. A total of 48 documents were signed for imports from Azerbaijan. Eyubov noted that Azerbaijan was developing ties with 72 Russian regions.

Sobyanin said that the trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Moscow grew by 30% in 2013. He pointed out that there was potential to boost trade turnover 30 or even 300 times. Besides sales of Azerbaijani fruits and vegetables, Azerbaijan plans to sell poultry.

Russia banned imports of fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, dairy products from the EU, Australia, Canada, Norway and the U.S. on August 7 in response to sanctions imposed over the situation in Ukraine.
