Russia may create center for prevention of ethnic conflicts

Russian Minister for Culture Vladimir Medinsky proposed the formation of an independent center for monitoring and preventing ethnic conflicts at a session of the Council of Russian Legislators and the Federation Council Consultative Council for Interethnic Relations. The basics of state cultural policy will be signed in December 2014, followed by the signing of the strategy for protection of the cultural and historical heritage of peoples, the cultural policy concept, and the concept for cultural and ethnic policy, TASS reports.

The minister described the developments in the context of gaining authority to work on ethnic policy from the disbanded Ministry for Regional Development.

The monitoring center will analyze information from different sources and prevent conflicts. Medinsky proposed the formation of a Coordinating Council to consolidate the heads of committees for ethnic policy of the regions. Medinsky noted that the coordinating councils for culture and tourism established two years ago were effective.
