Round up of CIS summit

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said at a CIS summit in Minsk that the Commonwealth had more potential for regional and international cooperation. He noted that Azerbaijan valued the CIS and had good developments in the economic sector. Aliyev expressed concerns about regional security, the situation in the Middle East and the European part.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said that the CIS was playing an important role maintaining stability in the world in the context of tensions in other regions. He added that cooperation within the framework of the CIS should focus on peace and stability, settlement and prevention of conflicts according to principles of the UN Charter.

Military cooperation and collaboration of law enforcers and border guards in fighting drug trafficking is an important priority pointed out by Sargsyan.

Kazakhstani President Nursultan Nazarbayev told the CIS summit in Minsk that a new concept could be composed for the 25th anniversary of the Commonwealth in 2016. He is confident that the CIS will continue developing trade, free trade zones, cooperation in transit and transportation, agriculture and the food industry.

Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev emphasized the irreplaceability of the CIS as a platform for cooperation of countries in the post-Soviet space. In his words, Kazakhstan’s chairing of the organization next year will boost cooperation. CIS countries agreed to let Kyrgyzstan host a session of foreign ministers in April 2015.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called cooperation in all sectors within the framework of the CIS the key instrument in strengthening good-neighbourly relations and beneficial ties in the post-Soviet space. According to Putin, the rate of development of the region is satisfactory but mutual trade was falling.

Putin noted that Russia had never been opposed to the rapprochement with the EU that Ukraine and Moldova wanted. The problem, he said, was that the risks for the CIS free trade zones and norms of other structures needed timely and professional discussions.

The Russian leader named preservation and extension of the constructive potential of the CIS as a common goal. He expressed confidence that Kazakhstan will take that into account when chairing the organization.
