Turkish president cancels state reception over collapsed mine

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has cancelled his state reception to mark Republic Day due to the collapse of a mine in Karaman. He said on October 29 that he would be there in 1-2 hours, RIA Novosti reports.

The collapsed mine was in Ermenek (Karaman Province). Its collapse on October 28 was followed by flooding. 18 of about 40 miners working there at that moment remain trapped at a depth of 350m. Rescuers hope that the miners managed to make it to safe areas underground.

Republic Day is the anniversary of the foundation of the Turkish Republic in 1923.
