Row in Georgia's ministry of defense gets juicier

The row in Georgia's Ministry of Defense gets ever juicier. Many believe that Minister Irakli Alasania's resignation is underway.

A number of top officials were detained on October 28th. They were charged with embezzlement. According to prosecutors, the officials embezzled about 2.3 million US dollars.

Among the detained officials were the head of the IT Department of the Georgian General Staff, Nugzar Kaishauri, former head of the Customs Department, Gizo Glonti, and the current head of the body, Giorgi Lobzhanidze.

The Georgian public is now discussing whether the minister is responsible for their deeds or not. At first Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said that he was "sad" to learn about the crimical case and that no one should "be in a hurry", when asked whether Alasania would be fired.

President Giorgi Margvelashvili for his part noted that the minister's resignation is "improbable," as he is "an effective manager."

However, after the prosecutor's office announced that the minister's first deputy would be questioned, the head of the cabinet noted that he would ask Alasania some questions himself.
