Kakha Bendukidze, a notable Georgian businessman, considered the main architect of President Mikheil Saakashvili’s reforms, died last night. Politologist Iosif Tsiskarishvili called Bendukidze’s passing away a serious loss for the Georgian economic and scientific communities. The expert called him an educated, skilled economist and an active member of society.
Tsiskarishvili said that Bendukidze was a reformer by nature who preferred to be in the background of political events. Bendukidze wanted to implement the Singapore model of economy and the Brussels model of politics. Moreover, according to the politologist, Kakha Bendukidze was also a teacher at two higher education centers he was in charge of.
Irakli Lekvinadze, the director of Georgian Business and Political Insight (BPI), an economic expert, said that Bendukidze was a very respectful man, a shrewd economist and theorist who had been implementing reforms in Georgia and giving other countries advice. In his opinion, the liberal atmosphere for business and the reforms lifting economic barriers in the past years were achievements of Bendukidze.
Petre Mamradze, the head of the Institute for Strategic Management, believes that Bendukidze did a lot of harm to Georgia as the minister for economy and minister for reforms. The expert admitted that the reformer had achievements, such as the strengthening and development of the Free University. Mamradze assumes that Bendukidze’s image of a major and successful reformer is a result of image-making. He reminded that the West had started publishing information about economic and state reforms and much had been written about the economic downfall in Georgia in 2008-2009.
