Russian and Turkish Presidents Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan have started closed-door talks in Turkey. Their tete-a-tete conversation will be followed by a session of the Top-Level Cooperation Council, TASS reports.
Putin’s cortege was escorted to the residence by a guard of honor. The orchestra played the anthems of the two countries. Putin and Erdogan introduced each other to members of delegations.
Stanislav Ivanov, a second-class state advisor, an expert of the Science Council of the Russian Security Council, emphasized that Putin’s visit was timely. The expert said that Russia needed to compensatefor the losses it could suffer in a new Cold War with the U.S. and Europe. Ivanov mentioned trade and political sectors as good subjects for negotiations between the two states.
Concerning differences, he pointed out their positions on Bashar al-Assad, whom Turkey wanted to resign. Nonetheless, the expert considers the fight against ISIS a common goal of Russia, Turkey and the rest of the world. Moscow may convince Ankara to soften its approach towards Syria and join the fight against ISIS.
Ambassador Pyotr Stegny, an expert of the Council for External and Defense Policy, associates Putin’s visit to Turkey with the first visit made in November 2004, when the Justice and Development Party had come to power in the republic. Stegny expects Russia and Turkey to discuss the regional situation, new threats and challenges, reformatting of the world.
Veniamin Popov, the director of the Partnership Center of Civilizations of the MGIMO Institute of International Research, noted that Russian-Turkish relations were playing a colossal role on the international agenda. He said that the position of Turkey was strengthening and playing a greater role in the region, international relations and the Islamic world. GDP has increased significantly. Popov added that the influence of the U.S. and Western countries was diminishing.
