Main event of 2nd Forum of North Caucasus Mass Media starts in Pyatigorsk

Pyatigorsk is hosting a plenary session on the depiction of the North Caucasus in the mass media within the framework of the 2nd Forum of North Caucasus Mass Media. The session is attended by Russian Vice Prime Minister Alexander Khloponin, Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the NCFD Sergey Melikov, Minister for Caucasus Affairs Lev Kuznetsov, heads of regions of the NCFD, Northern Caucasus Resorts Director General Sergey Vereshchagin, representatives of federal and regional mass media, including Vestnik Kavkaza Editor-in-Chief Maria Sidelnikova.

The session started with a minute of silence to commemorate law enforcers killed in a militant attack on Grozny yesterday. Alexander Khloponin said that the attack on the Grozny Print House meant that the role of mass media was rising. In his words, information about life in the Caucasus had become more interesting, cooperation between media sources more intensive this year.

Khloponin emphasized that a federal agenda interesting for everyone was needed. He added that Ukraine had an impact on the image of the Caucasus in the mass media.

Sergey Melikov reminded about the price law-enforcers had to pay for the safety of the population. He expressed hope that the recent operation will make people have a different look at police work.

Melikov pointed out the problem of trust, especially in the information sector. Information space needs modernization to encourage private-public cooperation, he noted. Melikov quoted the Russian president, stating that journalists should be citizens of their country, not just part of staff.

The plenipotentiary envoy noted that media focused on negative events had an impact on all journalists. The Center for Modern Caucasus Politics is starting issuing grants. Winners will be given rewards in half a year.

Lev Kuznetsov admitted that his visit to the Caucasus was a good opportunity to see developments with his own eyes. It is crucial to depict it with all its pros and cons, the official believes. He added that the potential of the region should be converted to real improvement of standards of living.
