Deputies of the Kalmyk parliament, the People's Hural, have approved
Alexey Orlov as the new head of the Kalmyk Republic, RIA Novosti
reports.
21 out of 26 deputies voted for Orlov. There are a total of 27 deputies.
The current head of the Kalmyk Republic, Kirsan Ilumzhinov, has been
in charge of the republic for 17 years, his term expires on October
24. Ilumzhinov refused to run for a new term in office.
Orlov was born in 1961 in the Kalmyk Republic and graduated from the
Moscow State Institute of International Relations. He worked in
various Moscow factories. In 1995 he became the Russian president's
permanent representative in Kalmykia. He is also deputy head of the
Kalmyk government.
