EU calls on Russian Federation to withdraw the agreement with Abkhazia

The European Parliament at its plenary session in Strasbourg in connection with the ratification on Thursday of the EU-Georgia Association Agreement has adopted an "accompanying resolution", in which it stressed that this agreement applies to all internationally-recognized territories of Georgia, despite the fact that Russia "continues to occupy regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia."

In the resolution, approved by 491 votes "for" to 84 "against" and 63 abstentions, MEPs condemned the agreement "On alliance and strategic partnership" between Russia and Abkhazia.

"The European Parliament condemns the so-called treaty "On alliance and strategic partnership", concluded between Abkhazia and Russia, as a step towards the complete annexation of Abkhazia and calls on Russia to withdraw the treaty," the European Parliament resolution is quoted by Interfax.
