The statement was made on the occasion of the adoption of the UN General Assembly resolution initiated by Turkmenistan and named "The role of transport and transit corridors in relation to international cooperation for sustainable development."
"Turkmenistan, based on its neutral status and the principles of maintaining peace, stability, sustainable economic development and development of international cooperation, has always emphasized the importance of environmentally sustainable, safe and public transport and transit corridors," Trend quotes Berdimuhamedov.
"I sincerely thank the leaders of the United Nations, as well as the leaders of all co-sponsoring countries, for their support in promoting the initiatives of Turkmenistan!" President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said.
In September 2014 in Ashgabat a high-level international conference was held. The conference resulted in the adoption of the Ashgabat Declaration.
The UN resolution calls on its members as well as international and regional organizations to promote the expansion of cooperation between the parties involved in the creation and operation of international transport corridors. It also lays the foundation for the formation of transport networks. Those networks would combine vehicle roads, railroads, sea routes and air routes through intermodal logistics centers and ports.
The UN resolution, which provides for the mobilization of financial and technical resources from international monetary and financial institutions, contained the key elements of the Ashgabat Declaration.
