Ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych said that he decided to leave the country due to the fact that "opposition leaders" were trying to kill him.
"They did not just decide to kill me – they did all that was in their power. My motorcade was shot at several times. One of the guards was injured. That's why I had to move to a place where the security forces still remained faithful to the oath, obeyed the commander-in-chief," Gazeta.ru quoted Yanukovych.
"At the time they had only had one option - to find one of the four constitutional means of removing me from power. The one with impeachment failed. It was also unreal to recognize me as incapable, when I was alive and well. So there were two ways remaining: voluntary resignation or death. The opposition leaders called me and urged me to resign. I refused. After this, the specific actions began that were threatening me and the people who accompanied me. According to the information I have received, and, most importantly, to the assassination attempt, I clearly realized that they decided to kill me," the former Ukrainian president concluded.
