Iraqi President Fuad Masum has handed back his UK passport. The UK government granted Masum citizenship as an asylum seeker during the rule of Saddam Hussein, BasNews reports.
In an official letter from Masum to the UK Embassy in Baghdad, he thanked the UK government for giving him citizenship and a passport during Saddam’s dictatorship at that time.
According to the Iraqi constitution, if the president of Iraq holds a foreign passport or citizenship, it must be relinquished upon taking up the position.
