Prospects of Azerbaijan-NATO cooperation discussed in Brussels

Prospects of Azerbaijan-NATO cooperation have been discussed in Brussels. Azerbaijani delegation was headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov. Deputy ministers for national security and emergency situations, head of the border service, heads of police departments were among the delegates, Trend reports, citing the press-service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


Azerbaijani minister of foreign affairs met the Deputy Secretary General of NATO Claudio Bizoniero, participated in the NATO council in 28+1 format. Mammadyrov talked about the new NATO strategy concept, realization of individual partnership plan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in his speech. At the meetings the sides discussed prolongation of Azerbaijan-NATO partnership program for the third period, security reformation in Azerbaijan, regional security.


Cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO started on May 4, 1994 after signing a partnership deal. Azerbaijan is one of the 27 other states, OSCE members, to participate in the program. In April 1996 they signed an official document with clear trends of cooperation.


Azerbaijan is fulfilling approximately 50 partnership goals. On August 3, 2005 Azerbaijani President Ilkham Aliyev signed a decree approving the individual partnership plan agreement. The cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO is currently carried out within the second stage of the plan, which involves 2008-2010.
