Matvienko: do not turn freedom of expression into moral nihilism

Public Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko has called on people to refrain from ridicule and irony toward a national, historical and religious shrine.

At the same time, she admitted that freedom of expression, including the right to criticize, a different opinion, one's own point of view, satire, are some of the most important values that must be defended.

"Freedom of speech, when it isn't restrained by any moral limiters of irony, is transformed into an absolute moral nihilism, into a violation of what is sacred to other people. And this is always a source of conflict," the speaker of the Federation Council said.

Matvienko also noted that "the vast majority of Islam followers condemn terrorism, oppose it, support the anti-terrorist actions." "None of the world's religions, including Islam, disputes or rejects such values as the right to life," she added.

The head of the Federation Council emphasized that the events in France "once again showed that terrorism is one of the greatest threats of our time."According to her, it is necessary to further deepen bilateral and multilateral cooperation in this area.

The head of the upper house of the Russian parliament does not reduce the problem of combating international terrorism only to coordinate the efforts of intelligence agencies of different countries. "It is equally important to thoroughly understand the causes that give rise to it and learn how to eliminate them," she said.
