Denmark calls for talks with Assad

Danish Foreign Minister Martin Lidegor spoke in favor of peace talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in order to put an end to the four-year bloodshed in the country.

"You have to negotiate with those who have power, and to recognize Assad as partner for peace," said Lidegor, who became one of the first Western foreign ministers to recognize the need for dialogue with the leadership of the SAR, TASS reports.

"I have always believed that Assad has no place in the future of Syria. And I stand by that opinion. But it is also obvious that if you want to negotiate about the future of Syria, you should talk with the regime in Damascus," the minister said.

The Syrian opposition opposes talks with Assad, but Lidegor said that "this obstacle can be overcome".

Denmark has supported the Syrian opposition, categorically rejecting Assad as a negotiating partner.
