Gomelauri named as Georgian interior minister

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili appointed Vakhtang Gomelauri as the interior minister today, substituting Alexander Chikaidze, who had resigned on January 23, Georgia Online reports. 

Chikaidze is suspected of concealing the people responsible for the murder of Zurab Vazagashvili in 2006. 

Gomelauri was born on December 24, 1975. He graduated from the Academy of Physical Education and Sports in 2001. He had been the head of a special service of the governmental security since 1994. He served in the security police of the Georgian Interior Ministry in 2002. Until 2013, Gomelauri had been the security chief of Bidzina Ivanishvili, an ex-prime minister of Georgia and a businessman. He became a deputy interior minister in 2013. He speaks Georgian, English and Russian. He has a wife and two children.
