Vice-Speaker of the State Duma says retirement age will not be raised in Russia

Vice-Speaker of the State Duma Andrey Isaev said today that the decision to raise employees’ retirement age would be unfair and economically inefficient, so the government is not considering such a possibility.

"In the near future no one will make such decision. The life expectancy of our citizens, unfortunately, is less than, for example, in the United States or Japan, and because of this, raising employees’ retirement age would be unfair. Economically, it would be inefficient, we have 8% unemployment," TASS cited Isaev.

If the retirement age is raised, young professionals will suffer, he believes. In addition, the Vice President said that women's pensions will be calculated in the same way as men's.

"We never allow gender inequalities in this question, except those which already exist today," he said, explaining that "the law specifies that women retire at an earlier age."
