Will passports force a wedge between Russia and Ukraine?

It has become known that the government of Ukraine will ban Russian citizens from entering its territory with internal passports and birth certificates (for children up to 14 years).

"This is my personal order of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is made," the president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said.

He stressed that such a document is the full right of a sovereign country. "The strengthening is made only due to concerns about the security of Ukraine," Poroshenko explained.

The Russian Foreign Ministry harshly criticized this decision by the Ukrainian authorities. Moscow urged Kiev to retain the old border crossing procedures for citizens of the two countries.

"Kiev's decision causes nothing but regret, because it complicates the contacts between millions of citizens of the two countries," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"On the contrary, we believe it is important to preserve the previous border crossing regime due to humanitarian reasons," the Russian Foreign Ministry noted.
