Russian Caucasus under threat from Al-Qaeda.
Al-Qaeda, the international terrorist organization, regards the North
Caucasus as part of the so-called "Islamic Caliphate" - a unified
Islamic state. Al-Qaeda wants to create it in Asia and North Africa,
Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev says, RIA Novosti
reports.
According to him, the global nature of the terrorist structures
indicates the high level of the organization, with uniform governing
bodies. For example, Al-Qaeda has been transformed into a movement
that brings together independent groups around the world on an
ideological basis. It has established stable contacts with regional
extremist organizations in the Islamic Maghreb, in South-East Asia
with Jemaah Islamiyah and with the "Caucasian Emirate” in Russia.
