Gennady Zyuganov: you can can learn a lot from Azerbaijan

Russia and Azerbaijan should learn from each other, the leader of Russia's Communist Party faction Gennady Zyuganov said, speaking about his recent visit to Baku, where he held talks with President Ilham Aliyev. "We specifically went to Azerbaijan because we need to learn from each other. Russia could build wonderful relations with a Muslim country, that are mutually beneficial to all," Zyuganov said, adding that he supports the reconstruction of a single post-Soviet space.

"We can learn a lot from Azerbaijan. The Civil War started there. I personally knew Heydar Aliyev. When he came back, the first thing I did was return to those who rebelled, he urged them all day. Then each supervisor had his own army, it was impossible to walk through the streets. Heydar Aliyev brought elementary order to the streets, he went to Orthodox holidays and spoke to Russians so that they did not run away," Zyuganov reminded, noting that today his son Ilham Aliyev continues his father's work.

In an interview with "Vestnik Kavkaza" the head of the Communist Party spoke about "very interesting talks" with the president of Azerbaijan. "I must say that he is a modern man who sees a deep problem, an active supporter of strategic cooperation with our country in the key areas of economics, culture, politics and social issues. Ilham Aliyev is an influential person in this vast region and he has authority and support in Russia. In my opinion, the whole list of issues and trends that have emerged in recent years is extremely promising, and we will actively contribute to their development," he noted.

Also, Gennady Zyuganov said that during the negotiations they spoke about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. "This topic was raised cleverly, tactfully, with the understanding that this problem is urgent and complex, with a sense of patience, a desire for a peaceful settlement and, at the same time, with the knowledge that  there never will be peace in the Caucasus without Russia. I have expressed this idea a thousand times, because it is our history, and we should cherish the relationship with Russia," he said.

"I was pleased by the fact that the deputies of Azerbaijan actively support Russia in all international forums, including the PACE. This is also an indication, and a very bright one. On the other hand, I was very worried about issues related to the situation of the Russian people in Azerbaijan. I have met with a Bishop of the Orthodox Church, I gave a lecture at the Slavic University, talked with representatives of the community - and I must say that I did not hear any complaints from them. They actively cooperate with Azerbaijani society, they work, they act, they learn," Gennady Zyuganov noticed."I really like the Moscow, St. Petersburg, Belarusian and Serbian centers in the Slavic University," the head of the Communist Party admitted.According to the leader of the Russian Communists, Baku is the one of the best capitals in the region. "I was in the old town, saw the magnificent tower of fire-worshippers, it's very interesting. I am satisfied with our short but very informative trip and I will strongly contribute to the strengthening of our multilateral relations," he concluded.
