Constantine Kosachev, the head of the Federation Council Committee for International Affairs, said in an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza that each republic in the South Caucasus had its own significance for Russia. He called Azerbaijan the most important commercial, economic and political partner of Russia in the region. Kosachev called energy an essential element of Russian-Azerbaijani cooperation. He added that the sides were cooperating in industry, agriculture, science and innovations with the help of Rossotrudnichestvo. The expert called Armenia the closest partner of Russia. He reminded that it was part of the CIS, the CSTO and the Eurasian Economic Union. In his words, many geopolitical competitors of Russia work in Armenia. About 350 NGOs, Kosachev said, were agitating against Eurasian integration and for rapprochement of Armenia and the EU within the framework of the Eastern Partnership.
According to the senator, Georgia is starting to realize the potential benefit of cooperating with Russia, while watching the developing collaboration of Russia and Azerbaijan.
