Lavrov: US undermining the prospects of promotion to nuclear zero

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the unilateral actions of the US missile defense undermine strategic stability.

"Today, strategic parity is affected by many factors. Those are the unilateral activities of the United States and their allies in the organisation of the global ABM, which have already destructively affected strategic stability, realistically undermining progress towards so-called Nuclear Zero - the objective, which, I believe, many participants share," Interfax cited him.

According to Lavrov, Russia is concerned about the presence of nuclear weapons in Europe and European non-nuclear NATO members which are actively involved in nuclear missions.

"US nuclear weapons capable of reaching Russian territory are still operationally deployed in Europe. These American weapons are being modernized, and some European non-nuclear NATO members are actively involved in the so-called joint nuclear missions," the Russian minister said.

"These joint drills of using nuclear weapons with the participation of non-nuclear NATO countries, confirmed by the decisions of last year’s NATO summit in Wales, are conducted in violation of the first two fundamental articles of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons".

Before the conference, Sergei Lavrov held talks with his US counterpart John Kerry in Geneva. The meeting, during which it was expected the Ukrainian crisis would be discussed, was being held behind closed doors.
