Iran helps Iraq to liberate Tikrit

Iran is actively involved in the operation to liberate the city of Tikrit in Iraq, captured by the extremist organization Islamic State.

"In addition to supplying drones, Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard force has fighters on the ground with Iraqi units, mostly operating artillery and rocket batteries, according to a U.S. military official. Iraqi Shiite militias closely allied with Iran are also heavily involved," TASS cited the publication in the electronic version of the Wall Street Journal.

Representatives of the IRGC for the most part confined themselves to artillery and rocket fire. A representative of the US Department of Defense, Colonel Steve Warren, reported some time ago that Iraq had turned to America for help against IS. Now, according to the author of the publication, the reason for this is clear: Baghdad has already secured the support of Tehran.

"US officials are watching the Iranian support for the Tikrit fight cautiously and are particularly worried about Iranian artillery causing collateral damage," the WSJ writes.

At the same time, according to the publication, the US government gives a positive assessment of this aid.
