Russian man jailed for 3 years in US for money laundering

A court in Boston (Massachusetts) has sentenced 23-year-old Russian Alexei Shushlyannikov to three years in prison for money laundering. Shushlyannikov entered the US on a student visa in May 2012.

In February 2013 he was arrested and in November 2014 he pled guilty. According to the US government, from December 2012 he had worked with hackers, who introduced viruses to computers of US citizens, and then demanded a buyout to eliminate the problems that appeared.

Shushlyannikov was not involved in computer hacking, but assisted the attackers to obtain the ransoms, TASS reports.

Shushlyannikov and his accomplices, according to the investigation, extorted from $400 thousand to $1 million altogether. Since Shushlyannikov has already been held in custody for more than two years, after a few months he will be released and will likely be deported to his homeland.
