Mohammad Yazdi elected as speaker of Iran’s Assembly of Experts

Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi has been elected as the new speaker of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, Press TV reports.


The former speaker of the Assembly of Experts, Ayatollah Mohammad Reza Mahdavi Kani, died in October 2014.


The Assembly of Experts is one of the main deliberative bodies of Iran, it consists of 86 experts in Sharia, scholars who are elected for eight years by direct vote of citizens. The Council chooses the head of state from its members, TASS reports.
